Summer Heights High – Jonah Takalua Playlist
Another playlist this week. I’ve been studying hard (and had my confidence completely shattered today) for advanced biochemistry(!) and molecular biology so I haven’t had the chance to review any new music and I’ve been wasting a ton of time (or “study breaks”) laughing my butt off to some older clips of Summer Heights High.
Summer Heights High debuts on HBO (US) and The Movie Channel in Canada around November 9th, though it’s 7 episodes were recommended by a fellow Spikedhumor user showing me a few episodes and making me laugh hysterically.
Chris Tilley plays 3 characters, Mr. G – an overeccentric and somewhat stereotypical drama teacher, Ja’ime a schoolgirl who’s a total bitch (for the lack of a better term) and Jonah a 13-year old illiterate problematic child. Jonah in my opinion is by far the funniest character with excessive foul language.
Here’s a clip (Jonah getting his dick touched):
Here’s a playlist dedicated to Jonah Takalua (it’ll make sense if you watch the season):
Boy From School by Maritime (Hot Chip cover)
Gun Mouth by Laurel Collective
Hate Me Now by Nas ft. Puff Daddy (Jonah loves rap and he is hated)
Angry by The Bug
Suspended in Gaffa by Ra Ra Riot
Dance Dance Dance by Lykke Li
Pictures in an Exhibition by Death Cab For Cutie
Stay Away by Nirvana
Here Should Be My Home by No Age
We Are All Accelerated Readers by Los Campesinos
Playlist Dedicated To Leap Years
Today is February 29 and I won’t be allowed to say it for another 4 years and considering many blogs die after that period of time, this may be my one and only chance to do a leap year playlist!
This playlist was REALLY hard to think of. I didn’t have any tracks that included “leap” and that makes me sad lol.
1. Drift Away by Uncle Kracker (only title in my library with “drift” as our calendar would drift off if there were no
2. I Stand Corrected by Vampire Weekend (the point of leap years is to correct our calendar as approximately 1 year has an extra 6 hours)
3. Calendar Girl by Stars
4. Hours That You Keep by Maritime
5. Pace is the Trick by Interpol
6. Common People by Pulp (Doesn’t a leap year wish it wasn’t the black sheep and be a common year?)
7. The Happy Birthday Song by Andrew Bird (February 29 is arguably the coolest day to have a birthday on!)
8. Holla, Holla by Ja Rule (other then Saul Williams there aren’t many other musicians with February 29 as a birthday)
Only 8 tracks but enjoy!
Allan’s Top Songs of 07 #50-26
I actually quite enjoyed picking out the top songs of 2007. There were many tracks from albums I loved and other singles that stood out in a lackluster album. Most of these tracks I have posted before (I’ll link to the post if you wish to dig hard enough to download them) and are mainly bands I am familiar with. Generally, I blogged about the band if they appeared in the top 50. There are some tracks I haven’t posted yet so you’ll be able to download them here (I think it looks bad if I have every mp3 listed available for download). I linked to the post where the other mp3s are available.
I did hate uploading tracks though and the linking stuff (takes forever). I also had to re-upload some tracks after annoying my friend Jack with bandwidth usage. Look out for the rest tomorrow.

Maritime – Heresy and the Hotel Choir Review
Maritime is a band out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin that I accidentally heard about.
I ended up hearing just one song and it was enough to convince me to buy the album. That song was “For Science Fiction”, I bookmarked the wikipedia entry for their band just promising I’d check out after hearing their song on The Hype Machine’s radio. I eventually forgot about Maritime and when going through my bookmarks I totally forgot why I would bookmark them. I put “For Science Fiction” back onto my media player and I just went on the label’s website to order the album.
Anyway Maritime was formed from bands that broke up namely The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan. I never really listened to them before and like all new music I find, it’s random but I just dig deeper to find more stuff I like.
Maritime is considered a pop rock band but to me they have elements of punk sound that has me disagreeing with the label of “pop”. Heresy and the Hotel Choir switches back and forth from pop rock sounding to that pop punk sound. I don’t know if I like the transitions between the two but I would say most hate on the purely indie pop rock genre so it’s clear that Maritime is very talented. I feel like the change gave me a headache and I didn’t really feel that smooth consistency but I can like almost every song depending on the mood.
I’ll give this album a 3.75 out of 5. Solid, great vocals, shows some musical talent but I feel like it’s not clear as to what direction the band is going to and thus has my brain not digging the album as a whole.
First person to comment (with a valid e-mail) gets 12 free tracks from bands on the label Flameshovel including Maritime, The Narrator, Mannequin Men, The Race, The Subjects, Phon, Jonathan Messinger and Zach Plague.
Here are two tracks to check out (including my favorite “For Science Fiction”):
