Motocade – Soap Opera Single and Vid

Motocade Soap Opera Single and Vid

I used to watch Soap Operas when I was younger. Under the impression of my sisters I would watch soaps such as Days of Our Lives and Passions and a bit of Young and the Restless. I really hate them now (as I should) with actor changes and generally bogus storylines.

Australia is apparently known for their soaps too, I recall Natalie Imbruglia being a former soap “star” but otherwise there’s not much to talk about soap operas.

Motocade
on the other hand is from Auckland, New Zealand (home of the all-blacks…I <3 rugby) which is 4 piece unsigned artist specializing in music I would call pop-punk.

They have two EPs currently out with an album coming out sometime later this year. Their first single off this album is “Soap Opera” which is more of a fantasy track that involves discussing going back in time with lyrics like “send me back in time”, “send me forward in time”, or “I got my glasses on, I got my magic glasses”. Are they fans of time travel or some cool sci-fi?

I think I was a bit surprised at the quality of the song. There are tons of sharp guitar riffs that one can rock out to, it’s ultimately VERY enjoyable as the guitar intro, and riffs are just incredibly catchy if not Les Savy Fav-esqe. Vocally Eden Mulholland has a very mainstream-rock voice in my opinion. It almost lacks that “down under” accent that I was expecting. I could picture an American singing these vocals. Eden shows off a good range as he sings with a high octave in some moments. It’s the type of voice that goes well in a post-punk band and I think a lot of people will enjoy it.

A great song and not a bad video either. Motocade has earned a ton of respect from me and are deserving to be on not only my radar but your radar too. Here’s the video:

I decided to check out their other tracks. First, Billy Murray Fan Club is solid musically; the vocals aren’t great as the screams do not seem as calculated. This band seems to be raw on their older stuff and if Soap Opera is any indication, they’ve grown a huge amount which each and every subsequent release. You’d wonder if they got a little bigger, worked with some producers they can be huge (I don’t like saying who’s the next big things because that’s out my control but I could definitely seeing them being a huge hit). Bombsquad is also a great track.
