Owl City – Maybe I’m Dreaming

Owl City Maybe Im DreamingMaybe I’m Dreaming was released this year and is the second album from Owl City. Adam Young, the brains behind the operation, uses his affinity for song writing and music to create an album that’s classy and timeless. Drawing similarities from bands like The Postal Service and A Rocket To The Moon, Owl City is essentially a pop/electronica band that has gone down the mellow path.

What makes Owl City so entertaining is the relaxing nature of the music, and Adam’s ability to stay upbeat and positive. Straying away from songs about girls and the likes, the lyrics remain meaningful and easily relatable, which is a big plus for this type of music. On The Wing, the first track is incredibly mellow, but at the same time holds a very vibrant sound. Through the use of an array of synthetic beats, On The Wing has that feel good pace that’s reminiscent of Death Cab For Cutie. Adam Young’s vocals are a perfect match for the melody of the song, and combined, they create an almost lucid environment that pleases the ears.

Much of the album follows in similar fashion, using a variety of synthetic sounds combined with drums and acoustic guitar to produce the happy surreal melody. The melody is then overlapped with the relaxing, slightly high pitched vocals of Adam Young. It is a perfect combination that creates thoughtful music with everlasting lyrics. Skipping ahead to the middle of the album are two back to back tracks that have easily become my favourites from Maybe I’m Dreaming.

The Technicolor Phase, the first track of the pair, has this incredible melody that gets me every time I listen to it. With a variety of crazy wild sounds like crystals banging and lasers going off, it is so action packed, but at the same time very peaceful and soothing. With the vocals, the song has a lot of things going on, but no one sound overpowers the other. The sounds mesh together to create an amazingly vibrant track that fuels the heart and the mind.

Second is Sky Diver, which slows things down a bit, and uses a noticeable piano piece throughout. The vocals are also heavily paced and this adds to the tranquility of the track. This song doesn’t feel as upbeat as the rest of the album, but neither is it anymore of a downer. Instead it packs a very relaxing meaningful punch that melts the heart and speaks to the soul. Almost like the opposite of The Technicolor Phase, the two back to back tracks show the best of both worlds from Owl City.

Owl City is an incredible band, and Adam Young is a man destined for stardom. His talents are overwhelming, and to think that one person pieced together this entire album is uncanny. The sequencing, the lyrics, and the vocals are all near perfect, and the mood set by this album is just right. An album to kick back to when you feel like relaxing and reminiscing over your thoughts, Maybe I’m Dreaming is just the prescription.
