PJ Harvey: White Chalk Review

PJ Harvey was recommended by a friend when I asked which female artists she would recommend. I really like female singer/song writers and it’s a personal goal to constantly find more and more females. I was recommended the song “Yuri G” and I wasn’t a fan of it at all.

White Chalk received some pretty good reviews and my goal with music is to give everything a chance. White Chalk for me is very soft that at times I can’t really distinguish between songs. Her voice adds to the mellowness but I don’t really see the innovation nor could I really get myself to listen to it. I’ve given it some time (released a month ago) and while some of my opinions remain the same, I’ve changed a little bit on what I feel about the album.

First off, this album is very EASY to listen to. Being soft and rather soothing vocals is good in my book as first impressions are very important. To me it comes off as a decent album. No song really stands out to me and I really wish there was more vocal skill involved. I haven’t really listened to anything by PJ Harvey other then this album and while I find this album decent, I am not sure I would rate it highly as some publications have.

I think it’s just the simplistically of this album that has left me wanting more and this probably just doesn’t suit the type of female singer/song writers that I absolutely love. I feel as if I may offend people by giving this 3 out of 5. Just know we all have different tastes and I respect that. I am not sure I will ever really like PJ Harvey.

Here are two songs off the album, I chose them because I think White Chalk is a bit different from the rest of the album and Dear Darkness is how I see the rest of the album.
