SixToes – Demo Review
I went home to Toronto this weekend for a visit. I checked my mail box and found myself a large bubbled envelope. Inside, there was a neat little paper album with the words “SixToes” on it and a piece of paper hoping that I enjoy the CD.
SixToes is a folk band from the United Kingdom. Hanging out in a small home studio squeezed in between an asylum and a historical cathedral, these guys play acoustic songs dealing with macabre themes such as death, darkness, witches, mysteries and “ridiculous nightmarish prophesies”.
Being only exposed to one folk song in my life (Bob Dylan’s Its Alright Ma), I didn’t really know what to expect. After listening to the CD a couple of times, I decided that I really liked these songs. They were off kilter, random, ghastly and kind of gothic and reminded me of the novel The Castle of Otranto. My favorite track on this CD is “Four Leaved Clover”. It has a sad tune. I’m not too sure what the song is about even though I have the lyrics right in front of me (I’m not too good with interpreting things), but it sounded like it had something to do with missed opportunities.
I also like their mix of Maps’ Elouise which I checked out from their MySpace page. I have never heard the original song but yeah… I guess it brings out emotions I never knew I had… okay… that came out a bit gay… ugh, not that there is anything wrong with gay folks.
Overall, from the simple album cover to the sinister tracks, I am pleased with this album sampler and I am determined to check out their album that will be released this summer.
