Week In Review September 1-7
Hey another week has passed and I’m exhausted. With school starting I’ve been busy and trying to not be lazy and on top of all my homework. We’ll see how long I’ll keep it up.
Here’s our posts from the last week:
We’re giving away 4 passes to see Metro Station at the Tattoo Rock Parlour. It’s a special taping for the Live At Orange feature.
Our newest writer, Kojo reviewed Nas’ Unitlted album (or really called the N-word).
Josh, did his first post on Toronto’s talented Zaki Ibrahim.
I reviewed Italy’s Six Red Carpet’s Nightmares + Lullabies, The Eaton’s 3-song EP Firestarter, a band out of nearby Scarborough, Chris Wall’s Field Manual, and Soda Fountain Rags’s It’s Rag Time. I also did a crappy bak 2 skool list.
Christian returns from a one-week layoff as he moves into Toronto review Stephen Malkmus and The Jick’s Real Emotional Trash.
Carmen reviewed The Twilight Sad’s Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters. This record received critical acclaim back in 2007.
Adam reviewed Toronto’s own Laura Barrett’s Victory Garden.
Glalib reviewed Phil Spector’s Back To Mono which includes the song He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss). He also saw Green Go and Europe in Colour
I also previewed the Virgin Festival.
Around the internetz:
Captain Melody put up the video of Ra Ra Riot on Conan. A little bit rough. I missed the show..still can’t stand very long.
CSS released a fun video of my favorite song off their album, Move. Watch it after the jump.
Justice put up some new tracks on their myspace. Sundtrak talks about their eeriness.
Something called the VMAs is playing today. I could care less. I reserve my Sundays for homework.
The Eatons – Firestarter EP
The Eatons are a band out of Scarborough, a popular place for bands to come out of in the surrounding Toronto area. They are currently a DIY (do it yourself) band producing and self releasing their 3-song EP “Firestarter”. It features 3 tracks, Firestarter (reminds of the Prodigy track), Give Me Something To Go On, and Holiday. The Eatons are a 4-man crew specializing in guitar pop with a creative edge backed with superb vocals from Boris Chan.
This is only a 3-track EP so understand that it’s really hard to review and come up with a suitable size of text. Firestarter begins with a simplistic intro and great singing and maybe the often-used “da da da da”. However, from a music standpoint this is great pop music, when things pick up and Boris singing at the top of his lungs. Give Me Something To Go On starts with a punk like entrance with the clashing and major instruments before lead singer Boris shows off his impeccable range. Musically it isn’t at a high level but they add enough creative elements here and there such as random guitar mutes and they are a still a young band with a lot of improvement to do in the future. They have a great sense of what makes a great pop song in the end though they aren’t afraid to try some things musically.
The real thing that makes the Eatons stand out is their producing and mixing. They sound like a band that’s signed to a label with tracks that are experienced with this thing called making music. They don’t sound very raw at all and I think they could make a great album on their own. Time will tell whether or not they will need label support for the recording process and whether they get signed or not but from what I’ve heard, The Eatons are better then a lot of bands that do or why else I would I be blogging about them?
With only 3 songs, I definitely will await an album. P.S. Go asians? I had no idea until I looked at the photo of them when completing a post.
Enjoy those tracks, it’s freely available on their myspace:
