Jamestown Story – The Prologue

Jamestown Story The ProloguePerhaps a little slower than the usual, Jamestown Story is a band that revels within the confines of mellow acoustic pop. Consisting of lone member Dane Schmidt whose lyrics are touching with vocals to match, his songs remain simple but soulful. The Prologue EP features five amazing songs that speak volumes through Dane’s words and sounds.

This tasteful album begins with It Will Be Alright (Hallejuah), which instantly turns the environment into a remarkable mellow stratosphere. With really light vocals overtop a layer of simple guitar chords, Jamestown Story keeps it uncomplicated and gets straight into the good stuff. The guitar work is reminiscent of a lot of acoustic bands such as City and Colour (although not nearly as folk), but it is the vocals and the arrangement of the songs that puts Jamestown Story into their own. With strong vocals, that boast so much raw emotion, including moments of desperation and strength, It Will Be Alright tells a story in an extravagant way. The chorus pushes the pace a little bit, but still keeps it incredibly soulful and soothing. A relaxing tune, the first track made me a huge fan of Jamestown Story.

Tracks two and three and are much of the same, with more epic acoustic slow jams. Track four, Come On, Come On is my absolute favourite. With the use of piano and light drums, it also features the matching vocals of Kari and Casi Carlson from Linden. This song is more hopeful, rather than desperate, and plays to the optimistic nature of listeners. A brighter track than the rest, it still has a very melodramatic feel, and is extremely simple in nature. With very few unique lyrics, Jamestown Story kept the song very simple and bare, which ultimately made me like it even more. Without all the glitz and glamour, it stuck to one very catchy chorus and kept the ball rolling from there.

The last track You’re Going Down is a little more aggressive than the acoustic sound of the first four tracks, and features the vocals of another artist, Ryan Wickard. The combination of vocals is really entertaining, and the arrangement of the song works really well. A very sad song, it strays far from the hopeful aspects of Come On, Come On. With more aggressive riffs and melodies there is a noticeable different from the usually acoustic pop of Jamestown Story. Still You’re Going Down is a really good listen, and end to an incredible EP.

Jamestown Story is an amazing solo band, and the acoustic pop is a very easy addictive listen. Moreso, The Prologue features five really solid tracks, all of which I think are hits. For a soulful tune to relax with, Jamestown Story is definitely a good choice.
