Weezer – Pork and Beans Single and Video Review

Weezer has been active for about 16 years now. I think I’ve dug most of their discography (if not all…yes Make Believe is a shameful guilty pleasure). But Weezer’s latest single has gone to epic levels of crap.

I didn’t understand what the blogosphere’s craze was with the Pork and Beans and I still don’t. I hated the song the second I heard it. It doesn’t resemble anything that they’ve done and it makes Beverly Hills sounds like a #1 hit (oh wait…). First lets dissect the music, it’s start off with a one note guitar line and the chorus is just distortion of another note. I basically can play this song if I want. Musically I don’t think people are looking for much from Weezer to begin with but lyrically is where you can argue that it was their bread and butter in the older days. I must say I’m more accustomed to older Weezer by fluke because like 5 years ago “El Scrocho” was the first track I liked and I’ll argue that it’s still their best. Lyrically, Pork and Beans also blows.

Apparently the song is supposed to be a song about them being angry for not being cool enough. Either way they use references like it’s a an advert and there is no actual flow or artistry in this song. Their rhyming ability is comparable to my high school poem abilities. It’s just downright shameful this song.

What do you get when you eat Pork and Beans? Flatulence and something resembling this song. Take a note from Weezer, eating candy with pork and beans is a terrible idea it may affect your creativity and your overall coolness.

Now onto the video:

The video has received almost 5 million views and while I can understand why…it’s almost a cheap way to get attention. Basically they gathered people who had their 15 minutes of internet fame and gave them another 3 minutes to annoy the shit out of us. From the numa numa guy, Chris Cocker, the chocolate rain guy and Kevin Federline.
KFed I HAD a lot of respect for, his appearance in WWE was actually pretty good and he was able to laugh it off with a superbowl commercial making fun of himself. Otherwise the video took an easy path to become an internet hit.

Like a major label artist knows…it doesn’t take a good track to lure people into watching your video.

The music still sucks and the video is shitty but I can understand why people are watching it.

” It doesn’t resemble anything that they’ve done”

The chorus at least, sounds totally like a song off the “Blue Album”. It’s a simple song, but it’s catchy.

I guess it’s a matter of opinion but I didn’t find it catchy at all…

I like it. Its good pop-rock, which is what I always thought Weezer were about, unlike the wet ‘Make Believe’.

  4. Allan — May 31, 2008 @ 9:58 pm

This song lacks the pop that I usually dig though… but it is popular so I guess I may be the black sheep.

I don’t like the song (boring), but I enjoyed the video. I am not sure if any other band has captured the new “youtube” generation so well. I can see this being on the Pop-Up Video of the future. Explaining all the dumb gags to this generations’ children will be comparable to me watching the Pop-Up Video for one of Madonna’s old vids at age 8 and learning strange and interesting facts about bull penis.

Ive been a Weezer fan since the Sweater Song and, of course, Buddy Holly. The reason I liked them so much was for the simplicity of the music… catchy, creative and NOT perfect. This song resembles those off the Blue album and although I’ll always be partial to the stuff I listened to when I was younger, I find myself humming or singing along when hearing Pork & Beans … just like it was meant to be

Good Job Weezer… see you on your tour this summer!

This song sucks, I don’t see why the modern rock stations play it so much…I have to turn the station every time it comes on.

Dude. I dont give a crap how you consider the video, youre one person and were all everyone else. In my opnion, thats the crappiest “review” about that video Ive ever seen.

  9. Allan — June 6, 2008 @ 12:58 am

I didn’t call the video bad. Apparently a review is based on its quality by whether you agree with it or not :P .

wow, that’s so weird, because i seem to have the exact opposite opinion of you. I disliked most of Make Believe just because I thought Weezer was branching too far away from that distorted, simply style that made me love them in the first place. This song seems to be a return to that style, which makes me really happy. The story behind the song is great, too — Rivers was told to write a song that would be more commercially viable and this is what he wrote.

As for the video, I could take it or leave it. It takes a lot for a video to impress me just because I don’t really care so much about that stuff. I did like the nod to Coke and Mentos, though.

Hmm I think I’m more of a pop lover…and make believe at least had elements of pop that I could like. Didn’t think it was that bad. I’m still reviewing the Red Album but yeah I wasn’t a fan of Pork and Beans. I just feel it lacks that poppiness/catchiness that I usually associate Weezer with.

The video is decent to watch. They made a pretty good viral/made for YouTube video. The song definitely left a bad taste in my mouth though.

The moment I heard Pork and Beans by accident without being told who it was I said – “sounds very like weezer”, and I’ve only got the Buddy Holly CD – so yes it sounds totally like Weezer and was easily identified as such and it’s actually in my opinion bloody excellent!

  13. PaddyGoo — June 17, 2008 @ 4:07 pm

“It doesn’t resemble anything that they’ve done” – Alan you have listened to them before I take it? It is dot to dot Weezer for goodness sake and one of their best singles for years (as many professional critics concur with). What a bizarre thing to say.

  14. Allan — June 17, 2008 @ 4:40 pm

I definitely have. I really dug their older stuff mostly because it has a sense of quirkyness to it as well as being great (indie) pop music.

I just thought the song writing and guitar pop was missing and I quickly soured on it. There’s nothing interesting for me on Pork and Beans.

  15. Mr. West — July 27, 2008 @ 1:44 pm

You hit the nail on the head Allan, this song is shit. Most of their singles do for that matter. As for not sounding like anything else they’ve done I think bands should follow that regimine, but this does sound like them and its pure commercialized crap.

  16. Danielle — August 19, 2008 @ 2:24 am

No matter what you say, they’re always going to be richer, and more popular, and more famous, and more cool than you ever will be. If you could write “crap” like that in middle school, then write something better and get famous off of it.

    It’s quirky, it’s simple, it’s flawed, but it’s fun… it’s Weezer.

  17. Allan — August 19, 2008 @ 2:37 am

I’m willing to resign to the fact that sometimes if you can write better then someone doesn’t necessarily mean more commercial or financial success. There are a ton of factors, including political.

It’s the same argument, people say a 7-year old can do a better job at president then George Bush but even then would be able to become president?

Success doesn’t work that way and I’m not going to praise Weezer for being any more successful then the milions of better bands out there.

I don’t mind sounding angry or jealous or lame but more important I embrace good song writing of artists that don’t have their millions and it’s only fair that being a millionaire comes criticisms from guys like me.

wow, i feel like i could have written this article. i too got into weezer the first time i heard “el scorcho” and i think that “pinkerton” is one of the greatest and most honest albums of all-time. i also like “the green album” and LOVE “maladroit”. i was disappointed with “make believe” but, compared to this album, it’s brilliant. it actually hurts to see someone that i admire so much and who has been a huge influence on my music take a plunge like this. saying “i don’t care” enough times only proves one thing. you do. please rivers, get back to doing your thing.

  19. allen — February 3, 2009 @ 3:06 pm

Well suck it i think the song is awesome!! it’s completely random and thats what i like about it!!!!!!! It also has Kelly from “Shoes” in the music video which is awesome!!!!! So if you got anything bad to say about it consult me and my friend Big Mac!!!!!!!
