Jason Bajada – Loveshit Review

Jason Bajada Loveshit ReviewJason Bajada, I got to see while volunteering as a stage hand at NXNE. He played in the early time slot (8pm) and predictably had only a handful a people show up to his show. I thought his performance was pretty good even if the place was empty.

I was pretty excited to check out his album Loveshit, as I got to hear the first single off the album, Home Still Your Bones. The album was finally released in 2009 so I figured I take the first shot at reviewing it.

Sometimes I don’t know what truly breeds success, like the difference between being big or struggling is at times minimal and very rarely has anything to do with the music. Is Jason Bajada big? He has the myspace numbers some artists who contact me only dream of having but he still was rather lonely on stage. I’m not a man of numbers anyway.

The album starts off with a somber mood that seems to prevail throughout the album. I personally don’t like the sad, sappy albums. Jason Bajada is very talented; he’s got a great voice and can write some pretty sad love songs. Otherwise, the album doesn’t really stick out like he does live. The “cry for me” act only gets you so far regardless of singing talent such that it gets boring and tedious.

I really want to like this album, Bajada is talented but he’s nothing spectacular and more or less mediocre on the album. It’s safe to say he doesn’t stand out from the numerous singer song writers out there with this release.

It’s cool to see his version of Wolf Parade’s You Are A Runner and I Am My Father’s Son, with his own simplistic laid back style. However as nice it is to hear on it’s own, at the end of the album it’s simply just another track that is lost into the fold.

Home Still Your Bones is the stand out track with help on vocals from Kim Neundorf that give the laid back style of song a real emotional dynamic that isn’t on other tracks. Bajada does try is hand at a 7 minute track during the title track which remains as the only song that steps out of it’s own clothes. This track would seem like either a pretentious idea compared to what the rest of the album showed but it proves to be more then a solid track. Unfortunately it’s too little too late.

Rating: 3 out of 5
Not really all that bad, it’s just there’s a lot left to be desired.

Couldn’t agree more, I don’t like any of Bajada’s stuff and I don’t understand how he got signed. There are far better singer/songwriters in Montreal who deserve a break more than this Sad Sack.

While I agree that Jason’s music isn’t that great, kind of boring and seems to sound the same on every song. I feel bad for not liking it because I’ve met the guy and he seems like a nice guy, a bit pretentious but nice enough.
