Keri Hilson – In A Perfect World Review
In a perfect world, someone like Keri Hilson would have had the opportunity to record and release her album long before 2009. This is the beautiful girl who has been penning music for pop acts since 2001. Not only has it taken more than 8 years for In A Perfect World, it was pushed back for more than a year. The Keri Hilson hype started well a little over 2 years ago, non? They cite budget cuts, and yet Ms. Spears released a CD and rushed out a crappy tour (click here for a review). Whatever. Let’s just tell the truth, Keri Hilson kept getting pushed to the back burner. Needless to say then, this is perhaps one of the most anticipated R&B album release in a long while.
The question is, she has written so many popular songs, will her album sound innovative? How about I tell you that when I’m listening to her album, I can tell you which popular R&B/Pop tracks she wrote or co-wrote (or whatever). And this is the issue with the album, it’s a good album… but it’s a rendition of all the releases she has worked on the last 8 years. This doesn’t necessarily take away from her talent, just her innovation. I had hoped that she would really push the envelope on her own album since she’s had such a successful formula with her previous work.
Perhaps it is foolish of me to have such hope and expectations. Regardless, I did enjoy listening to Hilson’s new CD, it’s better than most. The tracks have the typical R&B productions that are common today. The lyrical content is nothing special, the regular talks of love and its problems. The album features guest appearances from Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Ne-Yo, Keyshia Cole, Timbaland and Trina. I’d say the featured tracks are a bit better than the solo tracks, which makes me wonder if Hilson can carry a track on her own.
My faves: Set Your Money Up Feat. Keyshia Cole and Trina, Knock You Down Feat. Kanye West and Ne-Yo, Slow Dance, and Energy.
