Jon Lajoie – You Want Some of This? Review
Jon Lajoie is a popular internet star out of Montreal, Canada. He’s popular for good reason, he’s made numerous videos some with music or sometimes infomercials sponsoring things such as rapist glasses, pedophile beards of sorts (my favourite being the mainstream media). I’ve been following his videos for a long time personally. It’s clear he’s quite a talent. I figure that on April Fool’s (pre-April Fool’s) it would be nice to review something different for once, and why not something funny?
On You Want Some of This? you have Jon Lajoie’s multiple songs. I’ve seen his videos around before “Everyday Normal Guy” but it definitely was his breakout hit giving light to his various other funny videos or skits like the discontinued Pointless Profanity. Anyway onto the music, before his Everday Normal Guy hit, his tracks 2 Girls 1 Cup Song and High As Fuck were decent tracks. Nothing to write home about though. Everyday Normal Guy is a great song, it plays on the parodies of actual hip-hop where it’s about bragging about bling and sexual proficiency, Lajoie brings in some realism. The song borders both hilarity and having the ability to have people relate to it. Motherfucker.
Instead of being simply a one hit wonder, he went with more dance related tracks with first Sunday Afternoon and the intentionally sexist Show Me Your Genitals. I really dig the song as much though more so on video then listening to it. I think part of the allure of the video is the dress up and awkwardness of the character that Jon Lajoie has.
While the album might not do much to make you a Lajoie fan, his music is still very versatile. There’s no doubt that he will be around for awhile. I feel kind of bad that these songs were freely available as mp3s on his site and now you have to buy them. In any case, you can just listen to his youtube music videos over and over again.
From a music critic perspective it doesn’t rank high but who cares if it makes you laugh? The man needs his own TV show that’s for sure. He belongs on the small screen whether it’s a TV but he has made the most of YouTube to show off his talents.
