Moloko – Catalogue Review
After days of ugly rain in Toronto, today’ sun is more than welcomed. And with the sun, I decided to put the Moloko – Catalogue on repeat…for your listening pleasures on the late Sunday night and the early morning Monday — This is my ’sunshine’ review!
Catalogue is the greatest hits album of Moloko’s works recorded from 1995 to 2002. I’m not entirely familiar with Moloko, I’ve only heard their work here and there. Nonetheless, this album is very relaxing to me. First, a little background info. Moloko is an electro/pop British/Irish duo comprised of Róisín Murphy and Mark Brydon. The group’s been defunct since 2006. Perhaps I should treat this review more like a tribute and/or like a new album for those unfamiliar (or whom have never heard of) Moloko.
Catalogue starts with Moloko’s best known singles, The Time Is Now and Sing It Back. The Time is Now begins with a guitar intro, and Murphy starts singing in her haunting and melodic voice. This song is also on the original Sex and the City soundtrack (the one that accompanied the show, not the movie). Sing It Back is the single that broke Moloko into mainstream, the definite 1999-2000 club hit. My favourite track on the entire album is Pure Pleasure Seeker, it combines the electro dance grooves of the band’s more mainstream work, and their familiar haunting melodies. Fun For Me is definitely one of their more ‘haunting’ sounding tracks, with a combination of b-boy rhythm to her singing style. Bankrupt Emotionally and Where Is The What If The What Is In Why are definitely the most haunting tracks from the collection. I realize I used the word ‘haunting’ a lot when describing some of their more loungy tracks, because I feel like her voice creeps into your head.
Overall, this is a great compilation of electro/dance music from the Moloko ‘catalogue’. it’s a good combination of danceable tracks, with sufficiently non-popish grooves, and great electro lounge somber chill tracks, which make me appreciate the sun’s presence (today), and hopefully tomorrow for the Monday readers.
Moloko music for your ears.
