Best Friends Forever – Romance Conflict Adventure

It is extremely hard for a band to be gimmicky and pull it off. Most of the time they will get pushed to side and ignored for not being serious or labeled a novelty act. Yet even though the Best Friends Forever album Romance Conflict Adventure is the definition of gimmicky they completely pull it off. Not because they want to be gimmicky just because that how this Minneapolis trio are.
Romance Conflict Adventure sums up the album almost perfectly; the songs are generally about one or more of these things. Each song tells a tale of romance, conflict and/or adventure through some kind gimmick, but I don’t think gimmick is the right word. Take for example Eisenhower Is the Father, the song is simple love song told as a thank you to Eisenhower for creating the interstate highway system, as that is where the singer had great times with her boyfriend. Or Tour Magic, a love story told as it develops while they are on tour. The lyrics themselves are also extremely clever, referencing various cities, referring to other members of the band, talking about life in the mid west, and taking lines from Boston songs.
The sound is also really good, keeping it simple with only drums, bass and either guitar or keyboard. Jess and Brianna, the singers, go back and forth between each line in most songs, or sing harmonies. This keeps each song interesting as both singers work crazy well together and riff off each other perfectly. The best is that they use this technique in the song writing, with clever lines being split up between the two of them. The chemistry between the two singers is something I haven’t seen from a band in a long time.
So If you like tweepop or just need some happy music I would look these guys up. Hell even there sad songs have a happy ring to them.

I love BFF! Saw them once in Minneapolis a few years ago and thought they were a lot of fun.
