Cage – I Never Knew You EP free download
Where to start? I guess in order to understand Cage through his music, you must first understand what brought him to this point in his life. There’s no denying it was a fucked up ride. As a young child he was forced to tie homemade tourniquets around his fathers arm and inject him with heroin and at the age of eight his father was arrested during a standoff with police for threatening his family with a shotgun. As he grew he also began to experiment with drugs and was kicked out of high school. Beaten by his step-father and uncle, Cage fell harder into drugs and started on a violent streak himself. After being arrested on multiple possession and assault charges his mother convinced the judge not to throw him in jail, but rather seek help for mental instability. Sent away for an assessment, he ended up in a facility for eighteen months where he was placed on prozac and lithium – a misdiagnosis that would cause him to become suicidal, making several attempts on his life including hanging himself with shoelaces and storing up lithium doses for months to take all at once.
When set free at the age of 18, he started his career in hip hop and in 1997 produced what would become one of his most famous tracks to date, ‘Agent Orange’, which samples theme music from A Clockwork Orange. In 2002 he was signed to Eastern Conference Records and put out his full length debut ‘Movies for the Blind’. He has also been a founding member of the groups Smut Peddlers and The Weathermen. After leaving Eastern Conference in 2003 over money issues, he joined forces with Definitive Jux and released his second studio album ‘Hell’s Winter’ in 2005. Since then he sort of disappeared.
That is until now… on July 7th comes his highly anticipated third major release titled ‘Depart From Me’ on Def Jux, which is an autobiographical journey through his twisted past and present. As a special treat he has also put out a free EP titled ‘I Never Knew You’, named after the first single. This five song collection is a small taste of what’s to be expected from the new Cage. An amalgamation of genres delivered with a darkness he is famous for. It becomes clear how much he has progressed as an artist, tapping into deep seeded emotion and brought out in vocals that prove he is a staple in hip hop’s underground.
A video for ‘I Never Knew You’ has also recently been released, directed by Shia Labeouf.
