Photons EP Review

Photons EP Review

The Photons are a San Francisco got my attention with the song “This Must Be Love”. It’s a wonderful little indie pop number which always gets my attention.

They don’t seem to the typical octet. To me they aren’t on the Arcade Fire side of orchestra/classical influences. To me involves more of the upbeat pop like Los Campesinos. It also helps they use something like the glockenspiel but also use the Bassoon and Clarinet.

The Photons don’t overwhelming wow me with originality but they have some sort of charm that makes their songs on their EP quite entertaining. The EP does have a few misses but anchored by songs such as the aforementioned This Must Be Love and Something Left To Live For, giving a strong sense that this is a band to watch for. The band is still a bit raw on their not so straight forward pop songs but with just a little tweaking, the Photons could be well on their way to becoming a much more popular band.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Great pop. Flawed but what else can you expect from a debut EP? This EP was released in 2008 and they have some new stuff on their myspace, at the very least I’m going to check them out.
