Brave Citizens – Revolutions (Deluxe Edition) Review

Brave Citizens Revolutions (Deluxe Edition) ReviewUnder normal circumstances, re-releasing a debut EP on CD two years after the digital version would be self defeating. However, the quality of Brave Citizens’ ‘Revolutions (Deluxe Edition)’ conjures up a sense of dark pop. The quartet sounds like the combination of an indie rock band and the relaxing feeling of an acoustic trio. From electric organs to tambourines, instrumental variety is refreshing and effective. The album can sound uplifting in songs like ‘The Same Way’, and it can sound melancholic as a relationship breakup in ‘Young’. Yet every song contains very serious messages in which the music dictates how you receive the feeling. The polish and attention to detail is flat out impressive. This is seen through the deluxe edition’s exclusive alternate versions of ‘Wait For The Sound’ and ‘All or Not’. The electric guitars and drums are dropped in replacement for piano and rawer vocals. In no way are these throw away tracks either. In fact, they may be one of the best parts of the album. Revolutions is one of the best new albums I’ve heard so far in 2009. The added content on this CD makes this re-release a pretty darn good idea after all.
