Anchor & Braille “Felt” Review

It is no secret that Stephen Christian is the second love of my life (next to John Mayer). This man is incredible. The lead vocalist to the successful alternative rock band, Anberlin, an author, and co-founder of a non-profit, Faceless International, Stephen Christian embarked on his own acoustic side-project, Anchor & Braille back in 2004 with Copeland’s Aaron Marsh as the producer of the album. Felt was released under Stephen Christian’s own label, Wood Water Records (distributed through Universal Republic, the label that Anberlin has been signed to as of August 2007).

The way Stephen Christian is able to put his thoughts and feelings into words bewilders me. The songs written for Anchor & Braille are thoughtful, chilling and enchanting. Every song is so eloquently written and beautifully articulated with Stephen’s vocals over top of pianos, strings and acoustic guitars. Felt is hauntingly beautiful. The album was released in August 2009 and has been a favourite of mine ever since. Anchor & Braille is in no way shape or form, lyrically or content-wise, resemble anything Anberlin has ever done. Felt is a personal expression from Stephen Christian to the world of music, drawing from genres of acoustic rock, ambient, and folk.
With Copeland embarking on their farewell tour – Their Toronto date is on March 10th at the Opera House — I am truly hoping that Aaron Marsh and Stephen Christian will be working away at another Anchor & Braille album sooner rather than later. Additionally, Stephen Christian has yet to travel outside of the United States to promote the music of Anchor & Braille. I am eagerly awaiting for the day that Anchor & Braille to comes to Toronto to admire the brilliance of Stephen Christian up-close and personal.
