Valentines Day
Ok, so its Valentines day. For some of you that means you have to get all dressed up and and send valentines with heart stickers and chocolate, for others it means that you have to do your best to not seem lonely, for me on the other hand its a day where I enjoy calling all my friends in a relationship around 10 pm and ask them what they are doing just to fuck up their game. Well, Valentines day is a day for lovers so what better to write about than the best love songs, old and new.
Feist has one of the best voices out there. Whether she’s singing about heart break or love she manages to put a delicate spin on it and as a Canadian I can’t help but love her. Here with The Constantines they cover the classic Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers song Islands in the Steam, personally i enjoy the cover the more than the original. Perfect for any Valentines day mix tape Islands in the Stream is a delicate and pretty love song.

Well with this next artist you either love her or hate her. Bjork, a pioneer in the music scene never ceases to amaze and continually remains relevant in music, even if its her old material. While most people may not associate her with pretty love songs, she has a wide range of music from electronic to strange yelping she has put out some of the most amazing love songs. I couldn’t pick just one song from her for this valentines day jam. All is full of love, most famous for the robot sex scene music video is an amazing song. For all of those of you today who don’t have a special one, whether you want one or not, the message is hopeful. Love comes when you least expect it, not something I necessarily believe in but its nice none the less. Unravel is one of the most raw songs she has, really think its one of her best songs. This is perfect for whatever you may do after dinner, wink wink.

This song just makes me smile, it may not be your typical love song but its really fun to listen to and makes me want to dance. Ladyhawke out of New Zealand is one of my favourites, she was in a band with that dude from Empire of the Sun and I’m pretty sure he is the guy dancing in this music video of hers. It’s charming and just retro enough without going over board.

For all o’ yall who have a special someone who has another special someone this ones for you. Damien Rice was one of my favourites back in the day, he has a great voice just he is so fucking depressing. This song is one of the least depressing of his but its not exactly the happiest of songs, but its still none the less pretty representative of all those secret affairs going on out there.

With a new album coming out soon, Goldfrapp has been the talk of the internet for a while. Personally nothing that Goldfrapp has put out can compare to their first album, Number 1 is still one of my favourite songs to do this day and after 6 years, thats quite a feat. This song is perfect for the valentines day spirit without being overly cheesy it makes love songs listenable even when you aren’t in the mood to listen to soft pretty songs.

Any list of love songs just isn’t complete without Lykke Li, its no secret that I am a huge fan of the Swede. She is just cool in everything she does, she has her own thing about her which is something I look for. Well Lykke Li, if you are looking for a valentine I’m here. Again, kinda impossible to pick just one of her songs for the list so I had to pick two. Tonight is one of those songs you just start to love more and more, especially after seeing her live. She has the most amazing voice and puts on a great live show. She was on the twillight sound track so she is on the way to major success and I’m glad, she deserves it. Also, little bit is perfect for all of you who are sharing your first valentines day, and haven’t gotten too serious. Its still kinda awkward and all that, but just make the most of it.

For all of you who are suffering from a broken heart, i feel ya it sucks, but sometimes good music helps you through it the most. This track right here was my anthem while going through a break up, its pretty much the saddest happy song ever written. It is well written, performed perfectly and will have you singing along. Noah and the Whale writes some of the prettiest songs, so check them out.

Well, whether you love or hate Valentines day, there is no denying that love songs make up some of the best music coming out now. I wish everyone a happy valentines day, hope that you and your special somebody (or hand) have a good one.
